Being well prepared
One of the questions you must answer when you want to judge “is it safe out there in the off-piste?” is how well prepared are both you and the whole group.
Wearing an avalanche transceiver is an important step to being well prepared. If you are wearing one when you are buried you stand a good chance of being located by your friends. However if you are not proficient in how to use the transceiver, then you are risking the lives of your friends and skiing colleagues. The survival chances for a buried skier reduce by some 80% after the first 15 minutes following an accident.
Our beeper training has been improved over the years to ensure you can acquire the necessary skills very quickly. Equipped with this training you can organise your own practice sessions to continue improving your speed at finding a buried transceiver. We restrict the size of a group to six people per instructor; this ensures you get plenty of personal attention and sufficient time to practice your skills.
Regular training is important. This course can be booked as a refresher. Also if you are willing to commit to do at least two sessions with us and the trainer assesses that you are competent, then this contributes to your COPE certification.
We will take you to an off-piste area where we can explain the principles and practice a number of different techniques so you get in a feel for the practicalities. If you have a beeper please bring it. You should practice with your own transceiver. If this is your second time we go into how you deal with multiple burials.
I was in Val d’Isere at the end of January, and heard your talks – thank you. They were incredibly informative, and I was really impressed with the visual effects. Emma McDonald
Thanks Henry so much for the avalanche talk, it really was brilliant. I learnt so much that after all my years of skiing in the French Alps, there was so much I didn’t know or understand. I have already told quite a few friends Daisy Harrison
Skills required
You should be comfortable that you can ski/board safely down any pisted run. On a red run you can do good linked turns down the fall line. You should have some experience of going off-piste. If you are not sure please call us to discuss.
