You want to know - Is it safe out there?

In the talks we show you why the answer is not yes or no. you learn that it depends on

  • Where you go and when
  • How you go down or up.
  • How well prepared you are.

Our on snow programmes help you to understand each of these steps and equip you with the skills to know how to stay safe and have more fun at the same time.  Every week of the season we run the same programme on the same day and at the same time.

To help you choose which programmes to do, we have suggested 4 different modules.  Click on the buttons to see which is right for you.

Talk-on-the-snow-400

Thanks loads for today, I really enjoyed it and feel I learnt loads of stuff too.  Nicholas Stanford

I had the most excellent time.  Henry is a real enthusiast and inspires with his knowledge.  I got so used to skiing in special places without people that it was a bit of a shock to return to the piste. Henry also helped my skiing and my confidence    Brenda 2008

I wasn’t sure how Henry was going to top the amazing experiences of the year before but I gotta say they did and how! Feeling so safe and secure with them allowed me to push my mental and physical limits many times more than I thought possible, so yet again, thank you so much guys, AWESOME!  Beccs 2008

240carbon pfa plusAvalanche - off-piste probe -Orotovox 240 Carbon PFA

Cougar shovelAvalanche off-piste shovel -Ortovox Cougar Shovel

d3 bundle price

£325

This pack offers you seriously good quality at a great price.  Each item is  more efficient than the items in the basic bundle and well worth the extra cost.

Avalanche Transceivers

They are also called avalanche beepers or avalanche beacons.  We have picked out three units that we are completely happy will keep you safe.  Like all things, you get what you pay for.  But any of these will do the job.

Avalanche Transceiver - beacon - beeper - Ortovox-Patroller

Ortovox Patroller

£199.99

Great value

This is the most basic transceiver that we would recommend.  The Patroller offers both digital and analogue reception.  This means you can use the analogue to pick up the first signal at a distance.  But once you engage the signal the digital function provides direction and distance indication.  In the final phase of the search, the sound volume is very helpful to pinpoint the exact position of the victim.

Avalanche Transceiver - beacon - beeper - Ortovox d3

Ortovox d3

£235

Newer Technology

This model seems very similar to the Patroller but offers a more sensitive detection of multiple victims and a more refined direction indicator.  (and a nicer pouch!).  It is purely digital, but has the same range sensitivity as the Patroller

Avalanche Transceiver - beacon - beeper - Ortovox_S1

Ortovox S1

£375

The latest technology

Easier for less experienced users to find the victim.  This is more like having a GPS locator to track down the victim.  The digital display shows you where one or more victims are and directs you through the three stages of the search procedure.  if you do not practice enough and you like having the latest technology, then this is for you.  Some professionals are a bit sniffy about this device, but they are expert users and do not need it.

Probes for avalanche rescue

There are a lot of probes out there from different brands and different stores.  We have tried to simplify it.  We advocate 240cm is necessary.  Here are two that we selected.  One is less expensive and other uses carbon materials to be lighter in your pack.

Avalanche - off-piste probe - Ortovox 240 Economic

Ortovox 240 Economic

£39

Long enough for all recoveries but still good value

The reasonable priced alternative that still offers full functionality. The different-coloured segments, made out of aluminium, indicate the depth. The cord is made from KEVLAR®, the "conic" tubes and the practical express screw fastener allow fast assembly of the probe. The larger head of the probe drills a bore channel being larger than the diameter of the probe so that the probe can be pulled out easily and doesn't freeze.

Avalanche - off-piste probe -Orotovox 240 Carbon PFA

Ortovox 240 Carbon pfa

£65

Lightweight, everything you need from a probe

Unbeatable 190g divided on 240 cm provide the necessary safety outside. For all those who watch for every gram this is the right probe, as it is extremely lightweight, flexible and unbreakable thanks to carbon and cord of KEVLAR®. The extra larger heads of the probe drill a bore channel being larger than the diameter of the probe so that the probe can be pulled out easily and doesn't freeze. The "conic" tube segments and the practical express screw fastener allow a fast assemblage of the probe. Exact markings of depth for indicating the depth of burial.

Shovels for off-piste

What is in a shovel?  An off-piste snow shovel needs to be light, strong and easy to use.  It must fit in your back pack. In amongst the clutter we have chosen three.

Avalanche off-piste shovel -Ortovox Orange shovel

Ortovox Orange

£37

Basic, effective, good value

The blade, developed by ORTOVOX, is made from unbreakable torsion free Lexan which guarantees maximum performance in use.  An integrated handle socket makes this a compact shovel and prevents it from sticking out when packed away. The two -piece telescopic handle with T-grip is quick to assemble and also easily stowed away. And besides that, the flashing orange of the blade adds a colourful flavour when strapped to your rucksack.

Avalanche off-piste shovel -Ortovox Cougar Shovel

Ortovox Cougar

£49

Blade/handle design - you can move more snow more quickly

The cougar is characterised by an extremely sharp blade, its lightness and hoe function and its stability in use.  The ergonomic handle ensures a good grip for both left and right handed users.  The shovel can also be used as an hoe which, along with its more classic use as an avalanche shovel, also makes it an ideal tool for the building of kickers. Its sharp edge cuts through even the toughest snow with minimal effort

Avalanche off-piste shovel -Ortovox Professional Shovel

Ortovox Professional Alu 2

£59

Like Cougar but Aluminium means it is more durable.

Its torsion-free aluminium-magnesium alloy creates an extremely durable and hard wearing shovel blade. An ergonomic handle ensures a good grip for both left and right handed users.  The shovel can also be used as an hoe which, along with its more classic use as an avalanche shovel, also makes it an ideal tool for the building of kickers. Its sharp edge cuts through even the toughest snow with minimal effort.
