If you couldn't make our Talks this Autumn, but would like to attend or to recommend them to your friends, I'll be giving two further live talks next week. This time they will be Online Talks via Zoom, that you can watch in the comfort of your own home.

These live online talks will take the same format as the UK Tour talks with some extra bits on current snow and avalanche conditions added in. They will also include a Q & A session afterwards, where everyone can dive in with their questions.

You will also receive a ‘HAT Safety Pack’   which, if you order at least 7 days in advance, should arrive in time for the talk.

Tuesday 19th December.

18.00 GMT. Live Essentials on-line talk via Zoom

£19.50 including a HAT Safety Pack

‘Safety is freedom’ is the theme. With a view of helping people APPLY what they know, the session is built around an accident-reduction Framework. The goal is to help you making things acceptably safe. It’s been shown that off-piste and ski touring can be very safe, as safe as everyday activities like driving a car, IF you apply basic safety points. We go over these points as part of the Framework (you receive a memory aid card with the Framework on it). The vast majority of avalanche accidents are triggered by the victims, someone in the group (or someone above). Therefore, you have the biggest impact on making things ‘acceptably safe’.

It’s for off-piste and ski touring beginners to experts, even for pros as a client training tool. The In-depth talks are built on the Essentials Talk and the accident-reduction framework.

Thursday 21 December.

18.00 GMT. Live In-Depth on-line talk via Zoom

£19.50 including a HAT Safety Pack

This in-depth talk builds on the Essentials talk and goes in-depth into how avalanches are triggered (over 90% of avalanche accidents are triggered by the victims). The ideas is to help you further know the ‘beast’ in view of better knowing how to avoid getting caught up in its claws.

It is important that you have either attended an Essentials talk, or are planning to, before coming to the In-depth talk. This is a follow up talk to the accident reduction Framework theme of the Essentials talk. We will be only looking at a part of the Framework in this talk.

How avalanches are triggered

We discuss the latest thinking and theory on how, where, and why avalanches are triggered (and why not). This talk uses graphics and video to show you how huge avalanches of tens of thousands of tons can be triggered by one person weighing just 60Kg. Understanding why/how/where this happens can help you reduce your risk of being caught. Perhaps the most important point that’s addressed, in terms of human factors and accident reduction, is why most of the time a large avalanche is not triggered when the danger level is high, the slope is unstable and it ‘should’ have released.

When you attend a Talk, you’ll also receive our ‘HAT Safety Pack’. A great back-up for any talks and training. Invaluable for anyone who’s likely to be heading off-piste because it provides you with a simple memory aid to remember the key safety points to apply in order to reduce the chances of an accident and/or the reduce the consequences of an accident if it does occur.

It includes 2 deceptively simple size A7 cards in a plastic wallet.

  • 1 x Prevention Card with a ‘quick reference’ of the key accident reduction points. It contains a score card scale to help you reference the potential danger for a given slope on a given day, and more info like definitions of the danger scale
  • 1 x Companion Rescue Card covering the steps that you and the people you’re with need to implement in order to recover a buried victim in 15 minutes or less
  • 1 x Plastic Wallet into which the two cards are inserted

As a former F-16 pilot and United Airlines pilot, I strongly believe in an accident reduction approach like Henry’s – that uses simple memory aids, takes into account basic human factors and encourages teamwork –  for people who are going off piste and ski touring. This type of disciplined approach has saved numerous lives in the world of aviation and healthcare and will continue to help make skiers and winter sport adventures safer in their activities.

A Henry’s Avalanche Talk

Research shows that, all too often, avalanche accidents happen because people weren’t applying key safety points even if they had education and training . This is where our HAT Safety Pack comes in.

The 2 cards which make up the Safety Pack, then, are as follows:

1. Our Accident Prevention Card: an aid to help you to apply those points that can help you to be acceptably safe and a ‘weapon’, to help you fight human factor distractions which lead us to ignore basic safety points and are the origin of most accidents.

2. Our Companion Rescue Card to remind you of the most important steps you should follow, in the event of an accident in order to get your friends out… or for them to get you out from under the snow in 15 minutes or less (most victims are alive for 15 minutes or so if buried – most are not alive after 30 minutes.

The HAT Safety Pack is a complement for all training and for all levels of off-piste skier/boarder:

  • For beginners: a point of departure
  • For the experienced: a structure for gaining and applying further knowledge
  • For pros: an accident prevention tool for quick client training and review. And proof that safety points have been covered!
Henry’s Avalanche Talk (HAT) truly has done it again!
Their new “Pocket Guide” packages complex and important snow safety information into bite size pieces, which are easy to understand and ultimately will save lives.
Focusing on Decision Making, Risk Reduction and Crisis Preparation, this “Pocket Guide”  provides a framework for accident reduction based around Henry’s key messages of Where you go, How you go and be Prepared for Rescue.  Each section provides three key factors to help you plan your backcountry adventures.
Perfect for skiers and riders of all levels of ability, and is a major resource to protect you, your friends and family from Avalanches
