‘Safety is freedom’ is the theme. The Essentials Talk helps you answer the critical question “Is it safe out there?” We explain that there is no simple yes or no answer. The right answer is it depends on you. It depends on

  • Where you go and when (decision making)
  • How you go down or up (risk reduction)
  • How well prepared you are for a companion rescue (crisis management)

The hour and a half ‘Essentials’ talk explains how the ACCIDENT REDUCTION FRAMEWORK works and how you can use this to make going off piste just as safe as driving to the resort.

The talk is full of exciting images, videos and stories of accidents, great skiing along with close calls with danger. In this talk, we will deliver a risk management formula that will help you to see how skiing off-piste can be no more dangerous than the activities that you engage in each day.

The Essentials talk is not just for people new to off piste

It’s for off-piste and ski touring beginners to experts, even for pros as a client training tool and proof that key safety points were covered. The In-depth talks are built on the Essentials Talk and the accident-reduction framework.

Henry describes The Essentials talk

“In The Essentials talk, we go into the fundamental aspects of how to make decisions and reduce risks in the backcountry – Where you go and when, how you go down or up and how well prepared you are for a crisis. These skills are crucial to risk management and helping to make off-piste skiing as safe as driving to the resort itself … IF applied”

This in-depth talk builds on the Essentials talk and goes in-depth into how avalanches are triggered (over 90% of avalanche accidents are triggered by the victims). The ideas is to help you further know the ‘beast’ in view of better knowing how to avoid getting caught up in its claws.

It is important that you have either attended an Essentials talk, or are planning to, before coming to the In-depth talk. This is a follow up talk to the accident reduction Framework theme of the Essentials talk. We will be only looking at a part of the Framework in this talk.

How avalanches are triggered

We discuss the latest thinking and theory on how, where, and why avalanches are triggered (and why not). This talk uses graphics and video to show you how huge avalanches of tens of thousands of tons can be triggered by one person weighing just 60Kg. Understanding why/how/where this happens can help you reduce your risk of being caught. Perhaps the most important point that’s addressed, in terms of human factors and accident reduction, is why most of the time a large avalanche is not triggered when the danger level is high, the slope is unstable and it ‘should’ have released.

When you attend a talk you will receive a copy of Henry’s Accident Reduction card plus a Safety Rescue card

The Accident Reduction card provides you with an accident reduction framework, a ‘weapon’, to help you fight human factors’ distractions which are the origin of most accidents.

Avalanche experts have shown that education is not enough to reduce the chance of an accident. There’s overwhelming proof that we all need help applying the basics to be safe – and thus have more fun. The good news – you do not need to be perfect to be safe.

The Safety Rescue card  reminds you of the most important things to do in the event of an avalanche accident.

Pricing and tickets

The online Zoom events cost £19.50 per person. This includes a copy of the Pocket Guide which helps you apply the ACCIDENT REDUCTION FRAMEWORK

Plus Henry has added in a  safety rescue card that reminds you of the most important steps you should follow in the event of an accident.
