Henry Schniewind, founder of Henry’s Avalanche Talk (HAT), and off-piste ski guide, is an internationally renowned snow & avalanche expert, who studied avalanche forecasting as part of a geology degree in the US and then moved to the French Alps.  He has given over 750 talks and courses in the last 20 years, including presenting at international snow science conferences.  He has published many papers and articles – often in the British press.

Henry created HAT in response to the fact that 9 out of 10 victims of avalanches trigger the avalanche themselves, and that many of these avalanches could have been avoided.

Please find below a list of our new Resort Programmes for this season 2013/14.  There are a wide variety of choices, ranging from on-snow courses to guiding.  Most sessions are a combination of both skiing and learning how to have fun and be safe off-piste!

Off-Piste with Henry & the HAT Team: 3 day or 1 day courses

Henry and his team have been off-piste guiding in the Espace Killy for close to 20 years, so skiing or training with them is an excellent way to experience this fantastic ski area and what it has to offer.

This Programme comprises:

  • 3 days/1 day off-piste guiding with Henry & his team, including coaching on decision making and risk management
  • Henry’s avalanche talk – either a live version or an online version
  • HAT Quick Reference Card – a memory aide for decision making & risk management – plus coaching on how to use it
  • Avalanche search & rescue crisis management exercise using avalanche transceivers
  • Premium membership of www.henrysavalanchetalk.com, which gives access to the introduction talk, in-depth talks & forums for you to further your knowledge, ask more questions, etc
  • Certificate of International Standards of Off-Piste Excellence (ISOPE), which attests to participation on a course that provides full basic knowledge of off-piste risk management
  • Photos and possible videos of the session!

The 1 day course concentrates on getting through all the important safety/risk management points, taking ‘Henry’s Avalanche Talk’ onto the mountain and looking at key points from the talk, e.g. islands of safety, safe route selection, etc, in a practical way.  The "human factor" problems are also addressed throughout the course.  The 3 day course includes all these safety/risk management points and you can take advantage of a lot more off-piste guiding, including tuition on off-piste technique. It allows more time to enjoy your surroundings, experience more diverse terrain (for learning and for fun) and to consolidate your off-piste knowledge.
The programme, in summary, goes over the main themes of the HAT talk, which are the answers to the question: "Is it Safe out there?"

Prices below are per person (4 people minimum, 6 maximum per group):
1 day course:
€165 (£140 booked on-line – click here) with online talk.

3 day course: €490 (£430 booked on-line – click here) with live talk.

Private Group Beeper Training

In this session, you will learn how to be well prepared in how to use your avalanche safety equipment.  We concentrate on the role of the avalanche transceiver, and include a discussion and short demo of shovel and probe use.  At the end of the session you should be able to find a victim in around 5 minutes (with the goal of digging them out within 15 minutes).

Price per person: €55 (£45 booked online – click here) + cost of travel if outside Val d’Isère/Tignes.  (Minimum 4 people required to run a session. If you are 1, 2 or 3 people, we can work with you to try and build up the numbers).

Private Talks In-Resort

The Ride Hard ! Ride Safe Essentials Talk is full of exciting videos, images and stories of great skiing, along with close calls with danger.  In these talks, Henry or our HAT trainer will show you how to answer the question "Is it safe out there?"  We will deliver a risk management formula that will help you to see how riding off-piste can be no more dangerous than the other activities you engage in each day.

We aim to provide you with a great presentation of this talk in your chalet or in your venue. The live talk is about 1-1.5 hours long, depending on questions/comments from the audience.  Group size depends on you.  We are flexible, have our own AV equipment and can set up in a wide variety of locations.

Price per Talk in resort (VAT incl): €550 (£450 booked online – click here) + cost of travel if outside Val d’Isère/Tignes

"Talk On-Snow"

Put the lessons of the Ride Hard ! Ride Safe Talk into practice.  Learn the important principles of how to stay safe whilst riding off-piste.  This 2.5 hour session consolidates what we teach in the Talk, and brings it all alive.  In one afternoon, we will cover the key points: "Where you go (and when)", and "How to go down (or up)".  We will also give you a brief introduction to avalanche transceiver training.

Price per person: €55 (£45 booked online – click here) + travel costs if outside Val d’Isère/Tignes.  (Minimum 4 people required to run a session.  If you are 1, 2 or 3 people, we can work with you to try and build up the numbers).

Off-Piste Guiding with Henry

We have 2 options, depending on whether you’d like to do a full day, or 4 hours:
Option One: Full day
You can choose which hours you’d prefer:
Either: 08.45 to 16.30 with breaks and a lunch stop
Or: 08.45 to 15.00 with no lunch stop and just 1 or 2 short breaks – a shorter but more concentrated session
Price: €550 (£450 if booked on line – click here) for a private booking (up to 6 people)

Option Two:  4 hours
We are flexible in the timing of these 4 hours, as we realise that it is not always possible to make the usual 08.45 start.  While it is best not to set off too late for off-piste guiding, we could, for example, run a session from 10.00 to 14.00 or something similar.  Please discuss with us what times suit you best, and we’ll do our best to accommodate this.
Price:  €440 (£360 if booked on-line – click here) for a private booking (up to 6 people)

HAT Academy on Snow

Following the success of the HAT Academy in the UK, this season we are offering an "on-snow" version of it! This course, which takes place over several days, provides you with a solid grounding in avalanche awareness and practical decision making.  It includes talks, dynamic video presentations, avalanche transceiver training, workshop sessions and extensive discussion, as well as access to the HAT Club and online advice from Henry all season.

More information on the HAT Academy can be found on this website – click here.  And here’s what a couple of Autumn 2012’s participants in the UK said:

One of the key things I wanted from the (HAT Academy) weekend was the confidence to read the off piste conditions and choose my route accordingly …. I firmly believe that I have achieved that. In addition I’m now certain that I could, if needs must, use my transceiver, whereas before I only suspected that I could…. Eric Allsop

The (HAT Academy) course gave me factual knowledge of avalanches and the theories of how they are triggered. I learnt how to look and "read" the mountains for signs of unstable snow pack, how to interpret avalanche bulletins, wind and weather and what to pay attention to when choosing a route – be it up or down.  The beeper training was great fun and really invaluable in building up confidence of how to use your beeper and to approach multiple burial scenarios…. The course provided me with the theoretical and practical tools that now give me confidence to start ski touring… and enjoy it at the same time, knowing what I have to do to ride hard and stay safe…. Laura Mantoan Ritter
